The Story

Set in the 1880’s, we tell the story of the rivalry between sharp-shooters Annie Oakley and Frank Butler in the Wild West show, owned and operated by Colonel William F. Cody, alias Buffalo Bill. Frank does not take it too well when a female, especially one that shoots like Annie, muscles in on the action, so he hightails it to another outfit, a rival Wild West show run by Major Gordon Lillie, alias Pawnee Bill.

Buffalo and his show tour Europe playing before all the royal heads of the various countries. Sadly all they get for their reward is a lot of valuable medals which means that they have to return to America broke. It seems that Pawnee Bill’s outfit has not been fairing too well at the Madison Square Gardens either.

A meeting to join up the two groups breaks up when each discovers the poverty of the other. Frank meets Annie again, and love is in the air until, he sees the many medals that adorn her person. The question now arises as to who is the greater sharp-shooter in the world.

They quarrel, and Annie insists on a rematch to prove who is the best. The wise old Indian Sitting Bull points out to Annie that, if she is really clever, she can still win her man by losing the head to head match. Annie now realises that ‘she can’t get her man with a gun’ and all ends, as it should, happily.

ANNIE OAKLEY – Rachel Cleary

Rachel is a new member of the company who is delighted to have landed the leading role in this, her first production with Bilston Operatic Company. She has been studying at Thomas Telford School, and has just completed her ‘A’ levels in English and Performing Arts. We wish her every success.

FRANK BUTLER – Lyndon Flavell

Lyndon is delighted to be with the company once again to take on the role of Frank Butler. He has performed with great acclaim in many local productions including ‘Henri’ in “South Pacific”, ‘Sid Sorokin’ in “Pajama Game” and ‘Ike Skidmore’ in “Oklahoma”. A keen singer/song writer, Lyndon has performed nationally and created his own CD, entitled Strawberry Girl. Now domesticated, married to Lyndsey, our choreographer, and expecting their first baby in time for Christmas. He is anticipating a ‘quieter life’. Some hopes!

BUFFALO BILL – John Arnold

John has been a member of both Bilston and Willenhall Operatic companies for more years than he cares to think about. During these years he has undertaken a wide variety of character roles, both large and small. The challenge of ‘Buffalo Bill’ is one he is looking forward to with enthusiasm.

CHARLIE DAVENPORT – Andrew Dowbiggin

This is Andrew’s debut with our company, and after training at LAMDA, he has performed in a wide variety of dramatic roles. For the last ten years he has been associated with The New Kinver Players in the role of Actor, Stage Manager, and Producer. We wish him will in this role.

DOLLY TATE – Sue Evans

A talented leading member for several years, Sue has performed in many principal roles for Bilston including her favourite, ‘Lady Thiang’ in “The King & I”. Last year she gave a tremendous performance as our leading lady, ‘Nellie Forbush’ in “South Pacific”.

CHIEF SITTING BULL – Greg Yates

With a stage career so wide and varied, it would need a whole page to schedule the life of this talented gentleman. No aspect of stage work, dramatic or musical, performing or in the production field has been beyond his experience, extending to both professional stage and TV work, in addition to his day job.

PAWNEE BILL – Eric Page

Eric tells us he has spent half his life performing in one role or another, on and off stage, having undertaken many excellent roles with Bilston and other local companies. In his spare time he arranges concerts for many charitable organisations, roping in as many of his friends to support him.

FOSTER WILSON – Chris Frost

Someone who looks on rehearsals as great fun and also hard work, he is delighted to have been given the opportunity to appear in this production. Going back over twenty five years, his appearances are too numerous to list here, except perhaps ‘Stewpot’ in last year’s production of “South Pacific”.

KIDS - Group 1

Sophie Young, Billy Hayes, Lynsey Grant, Stacey Powell

KIDS - Group 2

Bethany Clews, Mark Bayliss, Abbie Rai, Hayley Smithyman
